Hello, everyone. My name is Bill Baker. I came to Japan three weeks ago. I’m so happy to meet you. I’m from New York, the biggest city in America, and people from all over the world live there. Some people say that about 500 languages are spoken in New York. There are a lot of popular places to see, and many people visit them.
This is my first time to come to Japan. I studied Japanese culture and history at my university, so I’d like to visit many temples in Japan. I also want to try Japanese traditional sports. I hear this school has a kendo club, and I’m excited about practicing kendo with the students. I don’t know much about school life in Japan yet, but I’m surprised to know that you clean your classroom every day. Students in America don’t usually do that.
I have been looking forward to teaching you English. I think we use languages for communication. I’d like to tell you that it’s fun to learn other languages. So don’t be shy and try to speak English with each other. Watching exciting movies and singing popular songs in English are not only fun but also good ways to improve your English. 大問3
問題文
次の英文は、真衣(Mai)が、平均睡眠時間(average sleep hours)について、英語の授業で発表したときのものです。1〜3の問いに答えなさい。
Some of you may count sheep when you can’t sleep. Do you know why’? The sound “sheep” and “sleep” are similar, so counting sheep may be one of the good ways to sleep. Sleep is important for all of us. We can’t live without sleeping. But many Japanese people say that they want to sleep longer if they can. How many hours do people sleep in Japan and around the world?
Look at the graph. This is the average sleep hours in Japan and the four other countries in 2018. You can see that people in Japan sleep 7 hours and 22 minutes on average. You may think that 7 hours of sleep is enough, but when you look at the graph, you will find that it is very short. The graph shows that people in China sleep the longest of all, and people in India sleep almost as long as people in America. People in Germany sleep shorter than people in those three countries, but I was surprised that they sleep about one hour longer than us.
Now look at the table. This is the average sleep hours of people in Japan in 2007, 2011 and 2015. What can you see from this table? In 2007, about one third of the people sleep 7 hours or loner. But in 2015, almost 40% of the people sleep less than 6 hours, and only about a quarter of the people sleep 7 hours or longer. It means that more people in Japan sleep(①s )than before.
You may watch TV or use the Internet until late at night. But we need to sleep longer especially when we are young. Sleep is important not only for our bodies but also for our minds. To make our bodies and minds more active, let’s go to bed earlier and count sheep tonight.

ウ→最終段落にYou may watch TV or use the Internet until late at night.

Have you ever heard the sound of a cello? It’s soft and warm, and I like the sound. I have been playing the cello since I was eleven, and now I practice it almost every day. My grandpa is a cello maker, so cellos are always close to me. He lives in a small house in the woods.
One sunny morning, I visited Grandpa. He was cutting an old maple tree near his house to make a new cello, so I helped him cut it. While we were working, I asked, “How old is this tree, Grandpa?” He answered, “It’s more than a hundred years old, Kenji.” “Wow, it was here before you and I were born!” I said. He taught me that older trees make the sound of a cello deeper and softer. Then he said, “Well, we worked hard today. Let’s go back to the house and I’ll make you a cup of coffee!”
While we were drinking coffee together in his house, Grandpa told me many things about cellos. He asked, “Do you still use the cello I made?” The cello I use was given by Grandpa when I started to play. “Of course, I do. I like your cello. I want to be a cellist in the future.” Grandpa said, “I’m glad to hear that. And what do you want to do when you become a cellist?” I never thought about that, so I couldn’t answer his question. I only said, “Well,( ➀ ).” He thought for a while and said, “Come with me, Kenji.”
Grandpa took me to the next room. There were a lot of cellos on the wall, and the smell of trees was everywhere in the room. I asked, “How many cellos have you made?” He said, “I have made hundreds of them. Your cello is the one I made when you were born, and it’s my favorite.” “Why did you decide to be a cello maker?” I asked. Then he answered, “Actually I once wanted to be a cellist like you, Kenji. But when I was your age, I hurt my arm and it was difficult to continue playing the cello. I wish I could play it well again.” I was surprised because he never talked about it before. I could imagine ②how he felt when he lost his dream at the age of fifteen. I said, “Then, you decided to be a cello maker, right?” He said, “Yes. I wanted to do something related to cellos because I still liked them. Well, I was lucky because I found something I really like early in my life.” He continued, “Look at all the cellos, Kenji. Every cello is made of old maple trees. Those trees were cut down a long time ago, but they can live forever as a cello.” I said, “I never thought about it that way. But when I listen to the sound of a cello, I really feel relaxed even when I am nervous.” He smiled and said, “It’s like a voice from the woods that encourages you. I want to make a cello that can express the most beautiful voice of the maple trees, Kenji.” Grandpa’s face looked soft and warm when he said so. Again, I looked around the cellos he made. I was impressed that he made a lot of cellos and still continued to hold his dream.
Now I play the cello in a different way. I just played it to be a famous cellist before, but now I try to play the cello to deliver the voice of the trees to people. I want to express it someday with the cello Grandpa made.
